reperfusion injury

reperfusion injury
Damage that occurs to tissue when blood flow is restored after a period of ischaemia. The damage is caused by neutrophils that adhere to the microvasculature and release various inflammatory mediators, hydrolytic enzymes etc. as a response to damage. Can exacerbate the effects of stroke or cardiac ischaemia and also can follow from extended periods of arterial occlusion during surgical operations.
